Help › Service Status

Service Status & Weather Indicators

This page combines two related references: the live status of each DNA service the Client gathers from (the “Gather Weather Report” long-time users may know this page as), plus the meaning of the colored “weather” indicators you see throughout the Client UI.

Status here is generally more current than what the Client is showing locally. The Client doesn't currently fetch live status updates, so the indicators baked into a given Client release reflect the situation at the time that release was built. This page is the authoritative current view — check here first when something looks off.

Weather Indicators in the Client UI

The DNAGedcom Client uses a small colored indicator next to many features to communicate at-a-glance status. The same color scheme appears next to gather services, individual analysis tools (Warthen Interactive Cluster, Common Ancestors, My Trees, etc.), and other tools as they evolve. The colors mean:

(These weather indicators are not the same as the Database status badge in the top-right corner of the window. The DB badge uses a similar palette but applies specifically to your database file.)

Color Meaning What it tells you
Green Ready The feature is fully operational. Use it normally.
Yellow Degraded The feature works but with known limitations — for example, partial data, slower performance, or workarounds in place. You can usually still proceed.
Red Down The feature is currently broken or non-functional. Wait for a Client update before retrying.
Grey Coming soon / unavailable The feature is not yet released, or has been temporarily disabled. The button or tool may be visible but inactive.

If you see a feature shown in two colors at once — for example greyed-out plus a yellow dot — that's the Client telling you the feature is both not-yet-fully-released and running with limitations. It typically means an early or preview build.

What To Do When a Service Is Down

  1. Update to the latest Client version. When a DNA service changes its website, an update is usually released promptly. Check for updates on the Home page.
  2. Check this page for the current status. If a service shows Degraded or Disrupted, the team is aware and working on it.
  3. Report the problem below if you’re experiencing issues not reflected on this page. User reports help us detect problems faster.
  4. Contact support at support@dnagedcom.com if the issue persists. Include your DNAGedcom username, Client version, and the log file from Settings.

Understanding Service Issues

Why does gathering break?

DNA testing companies (A*, 23andMe, FTDNA, etc.) regularly update their websites. When they change page layouts, API endpoints, or security measures, the Client’s gathering process may need to be updated to match. This is normal and expected — updates are usually released within days.

Common causes

  • Website redesign — The service changed their page structure, breaking the Client’s data extraction.
  • Security changes — New CAPTCHA, rate limiting, or authentication changes that the Client needs to adapt to.
  • API changes — The service modified or deprecated API endpoints the Client uses.
  • Temporary outages — The DNA service itself is down or having performance issues (not a Client problem).

Services currently unavailable

MyHeritage and GEDmatch gathering is temporarily disabled in the current Client version. These services will be re-enabled in a future update. See the MyHeritage and GEDmatch gathering pages for details.
