Gathering from GEDmatch

GEDmatch gathering is currently marked as "Coming Soon" in the DNAGedcom Client and will be available in a future update. The information below describes the feature as it will function when enabled.

Overview

GEDmatch data is gathered using a browser-based approach. You enter your GEDmatch kit number and log in through the embedded browser. GEDmatch provides matches, chromosome segments, triangulation, and family tree data.

Available Data (When Enabled)

Data Type Available Notes
MatchesYesMatch list with shared cM
Chromosome SegmentsYesChromosome Browser data (default: On)
ICW (In Common With)NoNot available from GEDmatch
TriangulationYesTriangulated segments (default: Off)
Family TreesYesFamily Finder tree data (default: On)
EthnicityNoNot available
HaplogroupsNoNot available

GEDmatch does not provide ICW (In Common With) data. To use clustering tools (CLM, Shared Clustering, Warthen Interactive Cluster) with GEDmatch data, you will need ICW data from another source or use file-based clustering with CLM.

Getting Started (When Enabled)

  1. Navigate to Gather > GEDmatch.
  2. Log in to GEDmatch through the embedded browser.
  3. Enter or select your GEDmatch kit number.
  4. Configure your gather options.
  5. Click Gather to begin data collection.

Gather Options

Kit Number

Enter your GEDmatch kit number manually or select from the profile dropdown. GEDmatch uses kit numbers (e.g., A123456) rather than login credentials for profile selection.

Chromosome

Default: On. Gathers chromosome browser data showing shared DNA segments. Has a dedicated Clear button.

Triangulation

Default: Off. Gathers triangulated segment data.

Trees

Default: On. Gathers available family tree data. Has a dedicated Clear button.

Match cM Range

Set minimum and maximum shared centimorgans to filter which matches are gathered.

Chromo cM Minimum

Default: 6 cM. Sets the minimum segment size for chromosome data collection. Segments below this threshold are not gathered.

Reports & CSV Files

Gathering saves your data into the local database (the .db file in your database folder). It does not create CSV files on its own. CSV files are produced by the report step, which reads the data already in your database and writes it out in the universal CSV format used by other genealogy tools.

There are two ways to produce the CSV files:

  • Run Report — Click this button on the GEDmatch gather page at any time to generate fresh CSV files from your current database contents. This only takes a few seconds and does not re-gather anything, so you can use it after a gather has finished without repeating the collection process.
  • Auto-Report — Turn on this toggle before you gather and the report runs automatically the moment the gather completes.

If you gathered without Auto-Report turned on and don't see any CSV files yet, your data is still safe in the database — just click Run Report to create the CSVs. There is no need to gather again.

Output Files

The report writes the CSV files directly into your database folder, alongside the .db file — the same folder the Open Folder button on the home page opens. You do not need to look inside the BrowserData subfolders; those hold the embedded browser's session cache, not your gathered data. The files produced are:

  • Match file: kitnumber_Gedmatch_Matches.csv
  • Chromosome Browser: kitnumber_ChromosomeBrowser.csv
  • ICW file: kitnumber_ICW.csv (if available)
  • Trees: kitnumber_Family_Finder_Trees.csv

The exported files are compatible with other genealogy tools, including DNAPainter, the Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool (GDAT), RootsFinder DNATools, and spreadsheet programs such as Excel and Google Sheets.

Additional Features

  • Run Report — Generates CSV files from the data already in your database (see Reports & CSV Files above)
  • Auto-Report — Toggle to run the report automatically as soon as a gather finishes, so the CSV files are created without a separate click
  • Cancel & Resume — Cancel preserves all data gathered to that point
  • Clear buttons — Remove specific data types before re-gathering
  • GDAT ID — Field for Genealogical DNA Analysis Tool (GDAT) integration
